REVIEW: Shadowlander (Shadow Sisters,#1) by Theresa Meyers

Shadowlander by Theresa Meyers

Publication Date:November 1st 2011
Publisher:Entangled Publishing
e-book

Four sisters, three rules to live by, one big problem.

O'Connell Family Rule #1: Don't let the Fae know you see them.
O'Connell Family Rule #2: Don't talk to the Fae.
O'Connell Family Rule #3: Never, ever follow them.

Most people only believe what they can see. Gifted with the ability to see the deep, dark fae of Shadowland, Catherine Rowan Mary O'Connell would prefer not to. When the fae abduct her friend Maya, Cate breaks the sacred O'Connell Family Rules and sets a trap for the handsome fae who haunts her every step.

Rook, High Court Advisor to the Shadow King, has been following Cate since she was sixteen. When Cate reveals herself as one of the fabled "Seers", Rook is stunned—she is one of the few that can permanently open the gates between their worlds. If he turns her over to the Shadow King, his court will rule the human realm.

Cate knows she has precious little time to find Maya. By midnight, the glamour of Mid-Summer's Eve will fade, leaving her trapped forever in the Shadowland, but Maya's abductor won't give up the woman he's mesmerized easily.

The midnight hour is almost at hand. Cate must choose: her freedom or her destiny.
I was dying to read Shadowlander ever since I read that amazing premise. It kind of sounded like Fever series meets Wicked Lovely to me and to be honest I was just desperate to find my next great UF series with fae, so when I picked this novella up, I was just certain that it would be great. Only to be hugely disappointed once more...

I'm not a big fan of novellas and that is why I try to avoid them usually. I simply think that there's not enough "room" in a novella to develop enough your characters or your plot. Well, one might contradict that there are 500 pages books that seriously lack in both those aspects development, but ok, you get what I mean...
Shadowlander was just a quick read, heavy on the romance department but aside from that a read that I won't remember for long and to sum it up in a sentence: A book that I shouldn't have bothered reading.
It may have been a really quick read as I said and although the story was something I would usually enjoy I just didn't care about the characters or the story whatsoever. I found Rook creepy what with him following a girl for 16 years and Cate a bit "lukewarm" and acting in a stupid way in some cases.

The story was progressing really, really quickly that I couldn't possibly invest or care about the characters and maybe that is something to be expected by a novella but that can't change my feelings I'm afraid. The book starts with Cate having lunch with her best friend, a best friend who is acting nothing like a friend I must add, who is later kidnapped by a fae and Cate rushes to her rescue. Don't get me wrong but from the little I got to know about that best friend I got the feeling that she was a self centered person and where was the need for our heroine to jeopardise everything, her family most importantly to save her from a fate she didn't even know how bad it was? I don't know, I just couldn't get Cate's sacrifice. The next major let down was when she formed a kind of a plan to save that friend, exposed herself to that creepy fae that has been stalking her for 16 years and from one minute to next she's madly attracted to him and talking about "recharging" sex (think of sex as a form of battery for the energy sources of a fae). Just couldn't go along with it for some reason.

Anyway, there were a couple more things that made me roll my eyes while reading this novella but bottom line is, that although the premise indicates a story more than intriguing, the execution of the story spoiled things for me. Maybe I shouldn't be expecting more, cause this is a novella after all, but truthfully I don't really think that's the case. The thing is that for this to be a good story there were lots and lots of things that should be added. As it is, I feel that Shadowlander is the plan of a full book that will be written again in the future.

EARLY REVIEW: The Iron Knight (Iron Fey,#4) by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

Publication Date: October 25th 2011
Publisher: Harlequin
Paperback, 386 pages

My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn'darkmyr Tallyn.

I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her.

My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl…

Well, what can I possibly say about the conclusion of the Iron Fey series apart from, Wow!Yeah,I think that pretty much sums up everything!Julie Kagawa, yet again delivers an astonishingly well written book and a beautiful conclusion to her fae series.

To anyone who has already read the previous three books of the series it is quite apparent that Julie Kagawa is a skilled writer who manages to deliver beautifully woven stories able to "travel" her readers.Well, somehow I found that in Iron Knight that skill of hers reached a whole new level.Kagawa's writing was more mature and I don't know if she just matured as a writer even more so,or if it is a result of changing the point of view of her narration and to be honest,I couldn't care less. What I do care,is that Iron Knight is a pure fantasy novel full of lyrical descriptions of wonderfull and imaginal landscapes as well as intriguing fantastical creatures!

I can't even describe how much I liked that this story was from Ash's POV!I loved that I was able to get an insight of his thoughts and see for myself what his feelings were towards Meghan and the fact that they can't be together. The part of his trials to gain a soul were my favorite by far.All the emotions and all the memories were given in such a way that it was like living through them myself.
Another part I really enjoyed was where we learned more about his relationship with Puck.Learning what Ash really thought about Puck and their form of friendship gave Ash a more "mortal" id,before even starting the trials to gain a soul.

Honestly,I could go on and on explaining the many things I liked in Iron Knight. But the main point is,that Julie Kagawa created such an amazing series, that noone should miss reading. After all, after reading even the first book in the series, you know that you have in your hands something you will not forget soon.So it shouldn't come as a surprise, that the final book is as good as the first one and then some more! The Iron Fey series,is simply that good!

READING: The Iron Queen (Iron Fey,#3) by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa

Publication Date: January 25th 2011
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Paperback, 358 pages

Buy via Book Depository

My name is Meghan Chase.

I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who's sworn to stand by my side. Drag me into the core of conflict so powerful, I'm not sure anyone can survive it.

This time, there will be no turning back.

Iron Queen,is plainly amazing!A just wonderful addition to the Iron Fey series, that shows that Julie Kagawa can do wonders with her stories!

We follow Meghan this time through her attempt to save the Nevernever and restore her life and that of those she loves to their previous state.Needless to say,I adored Ash in this book!Surely,I do loved him in the previous books also, but somehow in this one I loved him even more!Meghan's character develops even further. She grows even stronger and shows the independent nature of her character fully in Iron Queen.I really loved the way she progressed from the first book in this series until this one,but even so,in some moments I felt that what she did was a bit overstretched. It's one thing to grow stronger and be able to defend yourself after a short period of practice, but what I witnessed in some parts of this book with Meghan being able to fight as a pro,was a bit overstretched for me.But still,I really liked both the story and Meghan's development whatsoever!

Ash and Meghan's love story is as sweet as ever and the plot is even paced and action full as were all the previous books in the series as well! This book is also more emotional than the previous. The ending is just amazing! The choices all the characters had to made, and the decisions they took about their future, just promises an exciting 4th book to come.In general,Iron Queen just doesn't disappoint in any way!The writing style is amazing and just everything works in the best advantage of the story!

All in all, once more I got lost in the magical world that Julie Kagawa created and I can't wait for the next book to come! The fact that it's being written from Ash's point of view, just makes me that much eager to read it!

READING: The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey,#2) by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa

Publication Date: August 1st 2010
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Paperback, 359 pages

Order via Book Depository

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.

Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

Iron Daughter is plainly fantastic!Julie Kagawa just continues to amaze me with her wonderful writing style and her beautifully written story. The second installment of the Iron Fey series just grabs the reader's interest and you can't think of anything else until the book reaches its end!

The Iron Daughter is as much action packed and thrilling as The Iron King but this one,is even more emotionally intense, making me feel the heroes feelings and sympathise with them.I loved Ash!Every single aspect of him!And Puck in this book gets so much more interesting...!I knew from book one, scratch that,I knew before I even got this book in my hands that Ash and Puck would form the love triangle along with Meghan, but in the first book,Puck was nothing more than Meghan's best friend who was just really fond of her.Granted, there was a subtle romantic feeling in the way he treated Meghan but nothing too obvious...All that though in this book changes and Puck shows his true self, one I really enjoyed almost as much as Ash's if not more!Cause Puck is that gorgeous guy with the mischievous glint in his eyes ready to do anything anytime! And I loved him for that!
Meghan on the other hand,is the same sweet girl as in the first book, only now she slowly develops further as a character through all those things that keep happening to her.

In this book,we get to know more details about both the Summer and Winter court and the rules they live under. Kagawa's world is well built and smartly written and the pace of this book is so fast that the reader feels never bored.Add to that the existence of some well built and fascinating side characters and the result is a book you can't possibly put down. From Leananside to Grimalkin to Ironhorse,Kagawa can write each of her characters with equal care and give them a life of their own.

Plus, the romance in this book is Amazing!True,it was obvious that Ash and Meghan would be together, and I always find myself more interested in how the romance will bloom between the protagonists rather than its continuation, but in this case,I just couldn't get enough!

All in all,The Iron Daughter is as amazing and well written as the first book in this series and then some more.To anyone who has yet to read the first book,I totally recommend it!It really worths your time!

READING:The Iron King (Iron Fey,#1) by Julie Kagawa

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

Publication Date: February 1st 2010
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Paperback, 363 pages

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny—one she could never have imagined…

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa is not just an amazing book... it's fantastic and magical too!One of those books that stay with you long after you finished reading it with its beautiful and lyrical images and descriptions. To say I just enjoyed reading it would be an understatement!Try being exstatic about it better!

Before picking this book I was somewhat apprehensive towards it,despite the many good reviews I had seen and the opinion of people I know and take into serious consideration their opinion.I have to admit that although I've read and enjoyed some YA books about fey,I wasn't really thrilled with any of those, and I was especially afraid of The Iron Fey series due to the many references to Shakespeare's work.I've read a book with such references in the past and I didn't enjoy it in the least. So,I was a bit reluctant, but quickly I understood how wrong I was...
Definitely, there are some references to Shakespeare's work but only a few and only at the beggining.Julie Kagawa, took the characters of a very famous play and put them in a unique and smartly woven story creating a wonderful world and background for her book!

What I mostly loved though in Iron King are two things.Firstly the idea between the Iron Fey!Julie Kagawa took the fey myth one step further, creating a new race of fey,the result of people's dreams of technological progress! As soon as I reached that part of the book I was astonished by the very idea that our own dreams and aspirations have such a huge impact on Kagawa's fey world.I haven't come across such an idea ever and I was totally fascinated by it!
But apart the very idea of the Iron Fey,the other thing I really enjoyed is Jagawa's writing itself.A lyrical and mesmerizing writing, full of pictures and wonderful sceneries! In most books, the author just takes the reader by the hand and explains to him/her how the world is built and what's going on,but Kagawa instead, took the reader by the hand and shown him in perfect details how her world is built!
While reading The Iron King,I felt that the author just "made" me take a deep breath and immerge into her magical world and by the end of the book,I didn't want to come back to reality!

The characters are well developed, maybe I'd like to see something more about Puck, but ok that's what the sequels are for!,and the romance has the exact pace I love! Not too quick,or too late in the story, believable all the way!
I loved Meghan and her sense of duty towards her family, plus her reactions to everything new and astounding.Ash,is the bad boy I love reading about and I can't wait to see more about him and Puck is the exact opposite of Ash,adding to the whole story and love triangle even more!

All in all, there's not a single thing I can find to start complaining about this book, other than what was I thinking when I didn't order the whole series at once! Now,I just have to wait for the mailman to finally bring me The Iron Daughter to see how the story continues!
I totaly recommend this series to any YA lover!

READING: Dreamfever (Fever,#4) by Karen Marie Moning

Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning

Publication Date: October 26th 2010
Publisher: Dell
Mass Market Paperback, 498 pages

They may have stolen my past, but I’ll never let them take my future.

When the walls between Man and Fae come crashing down, freeing the insatiable, immortal Unseelie from their icy prison, MacKayla Lane is caught in a deadly trap. Captured by the Fae Lord Master, she is left with no memory of who or what she is: the only sidhe-seer alive who can track the Sinsar Dubh, a book of arcane black magic that holds the key to controlling both worlds.

Clawing her way back from oblivion is only the first step Mac must take down a perilous path, from the battle-filled streets of Dublin to the treacherous politics of an ancient, secret sect, through the tangled lies of men who claim to be her allies into the illusory world of the Fae themselves, where nothing is as it seems—and Mac is forced to face a soul-shattering truth.

Who do you trust when you can’t even trust yourself?

Dreamfever is yet another awesome book in the Fever series!Words can't describe who much i love this series and this book is amazing!

Before i continue with the review i must say that to anyone that hasn't read up to book 3 in the series there will be some spoilers about the previous books.

The story picks up exactly where Faefever ends, only this time, the first few chapters are being narrated by Dani, a fact that alone shows the extend of damage the events of the previous book inflicted on Mac.
I must say,the whole death-by-sex thing the Fae are capable on inflicting among humans bothered me from day one.I totally understand the need for the story of such a thing but it bothered me nevertheless.Seeing Mac suffering the consequences of the most savage rape imaginable was bad for me...I am a bit sensitive towards women suffering from any kind of violence from men only because they are able to inflict that kind of pain.I really understand the need of such an event for the story to progress and i'm not judging that fact in the book whatsoever,i just don't like to read about it.Hopefully, those pages don't last long and in any case,Moning describes Mac's recuperation very well,so your mind isn't all the time to the events that led to her condition but anyway,i still didn't like it.

Apart from the rape part, the story in Dreamfever progresses rapidly. The world as we knew it from the first books and was slowly starting to change in Faefever is now completely changed! So is Mac herself. One might say that Mac's character changes according to the world and the events that surround her.And i really like that fact.A person should adjust to whatever happens to him/her and emerge from everything stronger. And that's exactly what Mac does.
Barrons,is as good and enigmatic as ever! And i might add,as sexy as ever! The fierceness with which he protects Mac and the lenghts to which he goes to help her comeback is a tremendous bonus to his character.I still don't like how Mac depends on either him or V'lane to save her but at least one of the changes of her character means that at least she now excepts less from them both.
V'lane,on the other hand is pretty much of no much notice to me in this book.I never really liked him as a character and after what the fae did to Mac,i more than ever dislike him, despite the fact he didn't do anything to her.The way he regards human race with such arrogance does little to help him.

The ending of Dreamfever,is by far the worst cliffhanger ever...Just don't read the last chapter if you haven't on your hands Shadowfever!Do yourselves a favor and avoid the misery of not being able to immediatelly learn the rest of the story.Just have a copy of Shadowfever right next to you before the last chapter!

READING: Faefever (Fever,#3) by Karen Marie Moning

Faefever by Karen Marie Moning

Publication Date: July 28th 2009
Publisher: Dell
Mass Market Paperback, 370 pages

Buy it via Book Depository

The New York Times bestselling author of Darkfever and Bloodfever returns to Dublin’s Fae-infested shores in a bold, sensual new novel. Hurtling us into a realm of seduction and shadows, Karen Marie Moning tells the enthralling tale of a woman who explores the limits of her mysterious powers as she enters a world of ancient sorcery—and confronts an enemy more insidious than she could ever have imagined.

He calls me his Queen of the Night. I’d die for him. I’d kill for him, too. When MacKayla Lane receives a torn page from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s desperate words. And now MacKayla knows that her sister’s killer is close. But evil is closer. And suddenly the sidhe-seer is on the hunt: For answers. For revenge. And for an ancient book of dark magic so evil, it corrupts anyone who touches it.

Mac’s quest for the Sinsar Dubh takes her into the mean, shape-shifting streets of Dublin, with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into a dangerous triangle of alliance with V’lane, an insatiable Fae prince of lethally erotic tastes, and Jericho Barrons, a man of primal desires and untold secrets, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind, and soul.

As All Hallows’ Eve approaches and the city descends into chaos, as a shocking truth about the Dark Book is uncovered, not even Mac can prevent a deadly race of immortals from shattering the walls between worlds—with devastating consequences.…

I don't know how many times i've said this word in the past days, but God,i loved Faefever.Once i picked this book up,i just couldn't put it down, and i'm guessing that i will have the same feeling no matter how many times i'll read those books!Karen Marie Moning once again delivers a book full of suspence, mystery and sexual tension!Just perfect!

In Faefever everything changes! This book stands as a bridge between a normal world and a world consumed by darkness, standing on the edges of a dystopian novel. It's a bridge between the Mac we got to know in Darkfever and a Mac that will completely change.I don't think that Faefever is the 3rd book in this series by accident. It's right in the middle of the story with a first half closer to what we knew from the previous books and the second, slowly introducing the reader to a different and darker world.

Once again,Mac's personality develops,a development i'm not sure will stop until the story is finished.Along with her world that darkens, she herself starts acting and thinking in a completely different way than in the first book.Still, she struggles to keep what she can from her old self, but the story needs a different approach from her towards things and she adjusts perfectly.
One thing i loved in Faefever is that we are introduced to a couple new characters. We meet more closely with Christian, the enigmatic Scott that seems to be holding a special part in the story and Dani, the young sidhe seer with the really bad mouth but adorable all the same!I don't know how Dani will evolve and what her place in the story will be by the end,but i really thing that it's a character that really needs a book about herself in some point! It's a really interesting character despite how young she is and i really enjoy reading about her.
We also get to know more about inspector Jayne, another character i really enjoy reading about.I like that he too, doesn't care how a job will be done,as long as it gets done!

All in all,Faefever,is yet another astonishing book in the Fever series and yet again, the ending is a major cliffhanger.Seriously, the endings in those books become worse (in terms of suspenfull endings) as the time passes. But i still love them, and love the way i am totally sucked into this dark world!

READING: Bloodfever (Fever,#2) by Karen Marie Moning

Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning

Publication Date: August 26th 2008
Publisher: Dell
Mass Market Paperback, 337 pages

I used to be your average, everyday girl but all that changed one night in Dublin when I saw my first Fae, and got dragged into a world of deadly immortals and ancient secrets...

In her fight to stay alive, MacKayla must find the Sinsar Dubh—a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over the worlds of both the Fae and Man. Pursued by assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she can’t trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and powerful men: V’lane, the immortal Fae Prince, and Jericho Barrons, a man as irresistible as he is dangerous.

For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

What can i say about Bloofever!God,to be honest i expected that the second time i read those books would make me lose some of the excitement i had the first time but no...Once i started reading them,i just couldn't stop! And guess what,i enjoy them as much as the first time and then some more, because now,i understand some things better and i see that the plot and the story were sketched from the very beggining,at least their crucial points that is.

Bloodfever begins exactly where Darkfever ends. And i must say that i love the way Moning opens her books, with Mac narrating while she remembers how things happened.I just love the way Moning uses that fact to re introduse the reader to her world and at the same time do a brief recap of the previous book.A really nicely done bridge between book one and two that helps the reader remember everything, even if there are months between the publication of the books.Do i need to say once more that i find Moning's writing style brilliant?

Anyway,Bloodfever continues the story and everything slowly evolves and develops. The world as we know it get's darker and Mac's character is developing and adjusting to this world.I really love how Mac is presented. All her actions are really justified and consistent with her character and the things that happen to her.Moning isn't rushing her characters into actions just to serve her plot.It seems that her characters have their own personality and act like a real person would act.Mac struggles to preserve what she can from the pretty, enamored with pink girl she used to be,not that long ago, despite what happens to her.Granted, when the ocassion rises, she acts like she should, but not without cost.
Barrons,is well Barrons!Among the most mysterious characters i've ever read about with so many well hidden secrets, that the reader keeps guessing about everything that concerns him. He's sexy as hell and even when he is a bit savage, well,i can't help but feel drawn to him!
Vlane on the other hand, well isn't among my favorite characters...All the death by sex fae thing just bothers me to say the least. And because of that fact alone i can't feel close to him or like him,no matter how he tries to treat Mac better.

The plot is brilliantly woven. As i said,Moning knows the crucial parts of her story from the beggining, and not just plans along the way,and that is evident when things she mentions at this book, are immediatelly connected with things that happen later in the story.I couldn't see that the first time i read those books, but now i can and that fact alone makes me love this series even more!

To sum up,Bloodfever is as good as the first book in the series and the ending just leaves you eager for the next intsallment!

READING: Darkfever (Fever,#1) by Karen Marie Moning

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

Publication Date: November 2006
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Mass Market Paperback, 342 pages
Buy it via Book Depository

MacKayla Lane's life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she's your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks...until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death-a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone-Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister's killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed-a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae...

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane-an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women-closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book-because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands...

This is actually the second time i read Darkfever and to be honest,i enjoyed it as much as the first one and i have to admit that i kind of missed all this amazing world and characters so much, that i couldn't help myself and put this book down!

Karen Marie Moning is a brilliant writer! Her writing style is amazing, evenly paced, down to earth and with huge doses of humor!Exactly the kind of writing i really enjoy!Even if i have already read this book,i couldn't help but smirk with the dialogues between Barrons and Mac and with the way Mac sees and deals with the world and her problems!I mean, when Mac reffers to how a good book is always better than a really good movie giving as an example the Harry Potter movies and how that was not how Fleur looked like,i was just laughing out loud and totally agreeing at the same time!As i said,Moning writes brilliantly and in more cases than one,it was like reading thoughts of my own as words of a fictional character, and that has only happened to me with those books!

Apart from that,Mac and Barrons have an incredible chemistry! The tension is touchable and although as characters,i can't totally identify with neither Mac nor Barrons,i just love them! After Cat and Bones from the Night Huntress series, this is my next favorite couple ever!Mac,often gives a completely Barbie vibe, with her blonde hair and her inclination towards pink, but that's only on the surface.Mac is a character devoted to the ones she loves, strongminded and not easily intimidated.
Barrons on the other hand is almost ...brutal!But i love him!I love all the mysterious air around him,the way he seems to know many things,if not everything and no matter how hard he is or how bad he sometimes treats Mac,he has a soft spot for her that is plainly obvious! The scene where he paints Mac's nails is by far, among my favorite scenes of the book!

All in all,The Fever series is among my favorites and i totally recommend it to everyone i know! There's not even one thing you may ever hear me complain about and to whomever has read one or two of my reviews,i always find something to complain...(i'm a bit whinny to say the least!).But Darkfever,is just BRILLIANT!

READING: Thorn Queen (Dark Swan #2) by Richelle Mead

Thorn Queen by Richelle Mead

Publication Date: July 28th 2009
Publisher: Zebra
Paperback, 384 pages

Eugenie Markham is a shaman for hire, paid to bind and banish creatures from the Otherworld. But after her last battle, she s also become queen of the Thorn Land. It s hardly an envious life, not with her kingdom in tatters, her love life in chaos, and Eugenie eager to avoid the prophecy about her firstborn destroying mankind. And now young girls are disappearing from the Otherworld, and no one--except Eugenie--seems willing to find out why.

Eugenie has spilled plenty of fey blood in her time, but this enemy is shrewd, subtle, and nursing a very personal grudge. And the men in her life aren t making things any easier. Her boyfriend Kiyo is preoccupied with his pregnant ex, and sexy fey king Dorian always poses a dangerous distraction. With or without their help, Eugenie must venture deep into the Otherworld and trust in an unpredictable power she can barely control. Reluctant queen or not, Eugenie has sworn to do her duty--even if it means facing the darkest--and deadliest--side of her nature...

OMG!Storm Born was really good and interesting!Thorn Queen... is that much better!I really don't know how Richelle Mead manages but her writing gets better and better the whole time!To be honest,i didn't expect the sequel of Storm Born to be better and some reviews i read where a bit disheartening but i was quite pleasantly surprised!I enjoyed every single page of this book and especially after a certain point i just couldn't put it down!

I liked all of the characters' evolution. We got to learn much more about Kiyo's character, who in the first book of the series was the impersonation of male sexual attraction.Well,in this book we get to know a bit more about his character and motives and to be honest,i wasn't that thrilled of his character!I didn't like how he treated Eugenie at bed and much like he treated her in the bedroom he also treated her outside of it.I somehow got the feeling that he was a bit intimadated by Eugenie's power plus he just wanted to have the upper hand in everything,he just did it in not that obvious a way.More or less i was a bit troubled with Kiyo in this book and by the end of it i was mad at him!

Eugenie on the other hand is yet again torn in this book.Torn between two men and two worlds each one of them are representing a different part of her soul. She loves Kiyo but she's attracted to Dorian as well. She feels human, but the same sense of responsibility that feels towards protecting humans grom gentry, she also feels towards her people,no matter how much she resents herself for that.In overall,Eugenie is among the most well built and consistent characters i have ever come across in books and i just really love her!

Dorian,is pretty mush the same wonderful Dorian of the first book, and although again his appearances aren't very long i just love him!Haven't i already told i'm team Dorian? He still has his own motives about everything he does but he somehow feels a little bit more trouthfull than Kiyo.I just hope he doesn't turn to be a completely selfless bastard, cause that will be a major let down!

The story is amazing!Quick paced and with some breathtaking descriptions! The parts where Mead describes Otherworld are really like coming out of another era!Her world building was obvious from the first book, but here many parts of the story unfold at Otherworld, thus giving us the chance to meet this world in more details! And i just loved the way Mead combined our modern world with the one where electricity doesn't even exist as a concept! It was wonderful!

One more thing i want to add is that i also liked the way Richelle Mead is treating her heroes...She's not afraid to make them live through terrible incidents and get out even stronger as characters. She did it with Rose in Vampire Academy and she did it yet again with Eugenie.I'm not gonna say more cause it will be a huge spoiler but once i reached that part of the book i was left speechless!

After finishing Thorn Queen, all i can think is that i really need to read the next book in the series, but i have to wait unfortunatelly! At least Vampire Academy will soon be in my hands,so,that counts for something!

READING: Storm Born (Dark Swan #1) by Richelle Mead

Storm Born by Richelle Mead

Publication Date: August 1st 2008
Publisher: Zebra
Paperback, 361 pages

Buy it via Book Depository

Just typical. No love life to speak of for months, then all at once, every horny creature in the Otherworld wants to get in your pants...

Eugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who does a brisk trade banishing spirits and fey who cross into the mortal world. Mercenary, yes, but a girl's got to eat. Her most recent case, however, is enough to ruin her appetite. Hired to find a teenager who has been taken to the Otherworld, Eugenie comes face to face with a startling prophecy--one that uncovers dark secrets about her past and claims that Eugenie's first-born will threaten the future of the world as she knows it.

Now Eugenie is a hot target for every ambitious demon and Otherworldy ne'er-do-well, and the ones who don't want to knock her up want her dead. Eugenie handles a Glock as smoothly as she wields a wand, but she needs some formidable allies for a job like this. She finds them in Dorian, a seductive fairy king with a taste for bondage, and Kiyo, a gorgeous shape-shifter who redefines animal attraction. But with enemies growing bolder and time running out, Eugenie realizes that the greatest danger is yet to come, and it lies in the dark powers that are stirring to life within her...

I just love Richelle mead! She's such an amazing and super talented writer and i can't help but just love anything she writes. She has created three unique worlds and three amazing leading cvharacters in her three seperate series and i just enjoy myself equally regardless of which of her series i'm reading.

Storm Born is yet again incredibly good.Mead created a world that immediatelly sucked me in and a leading character that i couldn't help but love.Having read the first book in each of her series i really can't tell whichof the three amazing heroines is my favorite...Maybe Rose...!Eugenie is smart ,witty, sexy and really deadly. She literally kicks ass but isn't cocky at all.On the contrary, she'a a really down to earth character with a healthy sence of fear and she's afraid of other's as well as what her own self is capable of.
The male characters that consist the love triangle of this story are equally good...So good, that i just couldn't pick my favorite, although by the end i had to make a choice and i just leaned towards the faery part...Kiyo and Dorian are both sexy and caring towards Eugenie, but Dorian just held a special appeal to me.Kiyo was too dishonest for my taste no matter what his excuses might be,but still, reading about him was really yummy..Anyway,the love triangle is so nicely drawn that i,at least, just can't tell who Eugenie's final choice will be.And that is what in my mind makes a love triangle succesfull. Not making really obvious who the final choice will be.With Storm Born, you just keep wondering the whole time...
The rest of the surrounding characters are plainly amazing, each of them developed and with his own voice, thus making the story progress even smoother.

I can go on and on forever about how much i liked Storm Born and all the things that amazed me but the truth is that plainly, there's not a single thing i didn't like about it.All i can say is that i totally recommend any book written by Richelle Mead and this one in particular. It's just plainly obvious that Richelle Mead was born to tell stories and make her readers get lost in the worlds she creates. And that for me is what makes a writer's work really succesful. The ability to make his readers dream in the world he?she created!

READING: Need (Need,#1) by Carrie Jones

Need by Carrie Jones

Publication Date: December 1st 2009
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC
Paperback, 306 pages

Zara White suspects there's a freaky guy semi-stalking her. She's also obsessed with phobias. And it's true, she hasn't exactly been herself since her stepfather died. But exiling her to shivery Maine to live with her grandmother? That seems a bit extreme. The move is supposed to help her stay sane...but Zara's pretty sure her mom just can't deal with her right now.

She couldn't be more wrong. Turns out the semi-stalker is not a figment of Zara's overactive imagination. In fact, he's still following her, leaving behind an eerie trail of gold dust. There's something not right - not human - in this sleepy Maine town, and all signs point to Zara.

In this creepy, compelling breakout novel, Carrie Jones delivers romance, suspense, and a creature you never thought you'd have to fear.

I really didn't have no expectations when i started reading this book and to be honest,i didn't know much about the storyline.I just picked it because i liked the cover and i was expecting for yet another YA book with a storyline close to the "Twilight Saga school".Teenager, moving to a new town, with a bunch of problems to solve, where she meets the cute guy and all paranormal hell brokes loose soon after her arrival.Watching it from a distance,it really looks like another Twilight clone, but reading it made me think twice.Of course, the basic plot resembles Twilight, but thankfully, as the story goes on,things get better and Carrie Jones manages to deliver a quite unigue book in the paranormal YA literature.

I've read of pixies before, that's true, but this was my first book, where pixies where the protagonists, and they were quite mean as well. The main heroine also,Zara, was quite well developed as a character throughout the book, from being the death stricken teenager who collects phobias, just to overcome her own fears,to a young woman, who does everything in her power to help those she loves.Nick, was also sexy as hell and the rest of the surrounding characters, although not developed much, where good in surrounding the whole plot.

What i didn't like, though, was firstly, the fact that so many things happened in such a short amound of time. It's quite unbelievable if you come to think it more closely, how a person can grow over such a small amount of time, and how the heroes feelings change from one page to another.I always have the same problem with many books, and i just find it irritating.Ok,i agree, the writer can't rumble on and on for chapters without anything happening just to show us that time is passing, but to actually believe, that all those things happened in about a week, well,it's impossible,at least for me.Another thing, that, again,i come across most YA books as well as this one and find it disturbing,is the fact that every paranormal being has the need to go to school...Whether it's a vampire,a werewolf,an angel,a fairy or a pixie, all those creatures seem to have the unstoppable need to go to school just to create the perfect setting for the writer and,in most cases, without further explanation.

Apart from those points though,Need was a fairly good written book, although awkward in some points, whose biggest advantage for me was its atmosphere.Jones managed to deliver a chilling story,in the perfect setting.I mean Maine, has already got it's reputation from Stephen Kings' books, and Jones managed to preserve that atmosphere up to a certain point.

All in all, this book,is,your typical paranormal YA book, but you read it quite pleasantly and i will most definitely continue with reading the sequel.

READING:Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely,#1) By Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Publication Date: May 1st 2008
Publisher: HarperCollins
Paperback, 328 pages

Buy via Book Depository

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty-especially if they learn of her Sight-and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King, who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. His is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost-regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; everything.
Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning twenty-first-century faery tale.

This book has a certain faery tale feel to it!The writing style was constantly reminding me of a faery tale, with the good and bad guys, the prince charming and a heroine who doesn't want to be saved!I have to admit it,although at times i was lost with the many point of views(it's not my cup of tea, what can i say!),Melissa's Marr writing style made me dream...

I'm not a big fan of books of faeries, not because i don't like faeries but because most of the books i read of them where not that good,so i was a bit reluctant to pick this book. But,suprisingly,it wasn't bad at all!It was really different from most YA books i've read with an ending that i couldn't see coming, cause it's not the typical happy ending,at least not my typical happy ending!

I loved Donia, more than Aislinn i'm afraid so,and Seth more than Keenan.Keenan's character was, well, underdeveloped for me.Although many chapters of the book was from his point of view i couldn't get an insight of his character.I couldn't understand his feelings, other than his need to save his people, which makes him a good king i suppose, but didn't give anything on his character building.

I also have to point out that the plot has huge holes...The whole thing with the curse was never fully explained nor the conditions under which this spell would break. Why,were all the previous girl failed should Aishlinn succeed?I'd like some more explanation but i can't continue saying anything more without spoilers.
Anyway,to sum it up it was a decent modern faery tale, maybe not extraordinary but surely an entairtening read and certainly i will continue with the rest books in the series!
