EARLY REVIEW: Chasing Magic by Stacia Kane

Chasing Magic by Stacia Kane

Series: Downside Ghosts, #5

Publication Date:June 26th 2012
Publisher:Del Rey
Mass Market Paperback, 416 pages
Book & Purchase Info: Goodreads, Author's Website, Book Depository

A DEADLY HIGH

Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living.

Stacia Kane needs no introductions... If you have ever read even one book of hers you know exactly what I mean. If you haven't already, what are you waiting for???

Chasing Magic is just perfect. Just as good as every other book in the series, just as dark, just as violent, just as twisted but beautiful and lyrical at the same time. I know. Twisted and lyrical or beautiful can't be put together in a sentence, but Kane manages to do just that. I'm a huge fan of the Downside Ghosts series, no news here and I honestly believe that it would take some really bad stories for Kane to write for me to change my opinion on this series. And so far, each book is as good as the previous one if not better in some cases.

Chasing Magic has non stop action. From the first chapter until the last, there isn't a single chapter that leaves the reader to "rest", 400 pages plus and there isn't a single moment that the story just progresses without something crucial happening. Not even one. Don't ask me how Kane manages that, but she does.

Some really sick and twisted form of magic makes its appearance in Downside and once more, Chess finds herself in the middle of all this. But along with catching a bad guy, Chess has to deal with her growing feelings for Terrible, with how to make a relationship between them work and finally accept that she is worth something.

The way I feel about Chess is unique. She is probably the only character in literature that I have ever felt this way. I can't understand her, not understand her exactly - that's not the correct way to phrase it, but more I can't comprehend why she treats herself that way. She can only blame herself for the majority of bad things that happens to her, but I can't help but love her and care for her, like a messed up sibling that no matter how much he/she hurts you you still care for and want nothing but the best. I can't really compare it in any other way.

She keeps destroying things again and again, she acts in a way that she very well knows that will bring her trouble or hurt herself and the people she cares for but still she goes and does exactly the worst and then keep blaming herself over and over again. One might think that such a behavior might turn me off, but on the contrary. Because somehow, Chess has really grown on me, and everytime she does something wrong, all I want is to turn back time for her and make things right. I care for her, in a way that no author has made me care for a hero before. And that is the brilliance of Kane.

That, and her writing style. To be honest, I don't know how many times I have said it already, but Stacia Kane is one hell of a writer. She doesn't write about gorgeous people, beautiful places and things or easy relationships. She writes about people with beautiful hearts, about messed up but oh so real people and about everything that is beautiful in its essence despite appearances.

Her world is dark and shitty and its residents maybe junkies or whores or whatever but it's a real world. A world where people struggle to survive and overcome their nightmares in any way they can, right or wrong. A world that sucks the reader in and doesn't let him "emerge" any time soon. A world, I love reading about.

All in all, Chasing Magic is just as good as the rest books of the series, that in its entirety is a series all lovers of UF should read. Trust me!

EARLY REVIEW: Sacrificial Magic (Downside Ghosts, #4) by Stacia Kane

Sacrificial Magic by Stacia Kane

Publication Date:March 27th 2012
Publisher:Del Rey
Paperback, 416 pages

When Chess Putnam is ordered by an infamous crime boss—who also happens to be her drug dealer—to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she knows she must rise to the challenge. Adding to the intensity: Chess’s boyfriend, Terrible, doesn’t trust her, and Lex, the son of a rival crime lord, is trying to reignite the sparks between him and Chess.

Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’s real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth, investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. Someone seems to be taking a crash course in summoning the dead—and if Chess doesn’t watch her back, she may soon be joining their ranks.

As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.

What can I say about Stacia Kane, that hasn't already been said or that will do justice to her work! This author is plainly brilliant and with Sacrificial Magic she just proves that once more! Sacrificial Magic was among my most anticipated titles for this year, and now that I read it, I can positively say that I wasn't disappointed in the least.

And how I could ever be disappointed with something Kane writes? Her dark world is a place I would dread to live in while at the same time it fascinates me beyond words. Chess, is the kind of character I can't relate to, that I blame for many of the bad things that happen to her and at the same time my heart breaks for every bad thing that breaks her heart. I don't remember the last time that I invested so much in a fictional character. I mean, Kane has created her characters in such a way that you live through them, that you care about them, even if you don't agree with their decisions or their life choices.

Sacrificial Magic sucks you right into Kane's world and even when you reach its last page, you just don't want it to end. Chess, once again finds herself in the middle of a weird case that connects directly to the two drug lords of Downside.
We get to see how her relationship with Terrible evolves after the things that happened in the end of City of Ghosts, and let me say that I loved every single minute of it! I loved how they struggled through things, how Chess's insecurities played a huge role in how things progressed between them. There were times that I felt so sad about Chess, I can't even describe it and times where I just wished that everything would magically get better, just so she could be content.

Terrible...., well Terrible is amazing once more! Really, I can say over and over again how in love with him I am, but I'm afraid I would tire you. Let's just say that he's so incredible and so worthy of all the female readers' love!
The character that really surprised me in Sacrificial Magic though is Lex's sister. I don't know why I was so surprised with it, but from the moment she made her appearance I really loved her. I won't elaborate the reasons I liked her so much (it will be a bit spoilerish) but she really intrigued me.

All in all, Stacia Kane, delivers once more a book full of angst, passion and darkness that promises to satisfy every fan of this series. Trust me!

Needless to say,i became a huge fan of Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane.If you have read my previous reviews of the other 2 books in the series i'm guessing you understood how much i liked them!
City of Ghosts,is as good as the previous books and if i may say even better!

Downside Ghosts series is among those series that just gets better by each book and each one of them manages to grab the reader's attention and suck him even deeper into an amazing world!I find it hard to write this review cause i think that i have already said everything in my previous reviews...The plot is amazing and the world where the story unfolds is getting even crueller, book by book, but still beautiful in it's own ways!I think that for a world where no religion exists, this book's characters are really religious, but believing in themselves and their own power rather than somewhere else.

I just loved the way the relationship between Chess and Terrible builds up.It's among the most believable couples i've encountered in books, with a relationhip not full of roses or any other sweetness, something that surely fits with the whole setting of this story.Nothing here is easy or beautiful, but still, you get to love every aspect of this world!Every character here isn't sketched perfectly but his darker emotions are vividly displayed! And i just loved that! That's how real people are,not just perfect, conscious and righteous the whole time! And maybe that's why i enjoyed every single page of this book, scratch that,of every book in this series!

The plot again follows the same steps,as in the previous books, but here we get to learn more on everything!More on the characters' life, more on the world,on the politics and the way everything works, plus more on the Lamaru, the really bad guys! All in all,a more than decent book and definitely the best series i started this year!I'm guessing my Christmas came earlier, when i decided to pich this series!

READING: Unholy Magic (Downside Ghosts #2) by Stacia Kane

Unholy Magic by Stacia Kane

Paperback, 360 pages

ENEMIES DON’T NEED TO BE ALIVE TO BE DEADLY.

For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.

Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.

I'm becoming seriously addicted with this series...I started reading slowly, but after a couple chapters i just couldn't put this book down...It was fast paced, sexy and even heartbreaking at points!

More or less,Unholy Magic follows the same pattern and plotline of Unholy Ghosts. We follow Chess's adventures, while she's yet again on the chase of some seriously bad magic and ghosts and along with that thrill ride you get to know more and more about her,the people surrounding her and the world where the story unfolds.
This time i didn't encounter the same language problem i had with the first book of the series.I don't think that happened because of any change in the writing style,i just got used to it and didn't have a problem getting into the story immediately. And what a story it was...!I don't know if it's just me and the fact i got into the story immediately this time, but the story of Unholy MAgic seemed to me somehow more tight than the one of the first book.It still has the same even pace but the difference was that now i understood exactly the world building and how the bad guys worked.Again,i'll note that it maybe just be me and nothing actually different in the writing style.Believe me,knowing from the beggining what's going on and not trying to translate the dialogues is a huge advantage!

Anyway, again in this book i was a bit troubled by Chess's drug addiction, which is shown in more extent in this installment, but again i found myself caring deeply for her and what happened to her.I mean,on the one hand i couldn't connect with her and the actions she was more or less forced to take because of her addiction but on the other i could really feel her and sympathise with her.I could actually feel her frustration and how imprisoned she felt at times and for that exact reasons i really wanted for every bad thing that happened to her to get fixed right that second, only for her to feel better.I knew she just met the coincequences of her very actions but that didn't make me feel bad for her nonetheless.
Terrible on the other hand is... just an amazing guy.I have to admit,my all time fictional crush is Bones, but i'm afraid to say so,he's starting to have some serious competition...!Who could have imagined that a seemingly impenetrable and tough guy could actually be so sensitive and thoughtfull!I just loved him and his fightings with Chess were amazing.Through those fightings you could get glimpses of his character and the way he thought about things and i really enjoyed those parts, well mostly! My other part was just occupied feeling Chess's desperation during those fights...

There's really not much i can say about this book,if you have read the first one don't expect many differences here.Same easy writing style, strong plot and amazing set of characters. So,if you liked the first book in the series, this will get you addicted further to this amazing, dark, cruel but wonderful world!Honest;y,Downside Ghosts is the best Urban Fantasy series i read in 2010.Don't miss it!

Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah. From the Paperback edition.

Unholy Ghosts... is different from whatever i expected!Maybe the best and more hardcore urban fantasy book i've ever read!Stacia Kane created an amazing, though a bit confusing for me at times world that sucked me in from the very first pages of the book.

I must admit,i had a bit of a problem with the language that is used here.English isn't my native language and at first i found it hard to understand the slang that is being used, especially at the dialog parts. But after a while i got used to it and more or less i understood what was going on.But the language was a small problem and to be honest,i don't know if the world building was indeed so confusing or i just failed to understand it especially at the beggining.Kane surely created a dark and violent world almost post apocalyptic.I loved that exact fact!I enjoyed the chilling and sometimeds gruesome descriptions and even the cast of anti heroes rather than heroes that she picked. The main heroine,Chess,is a drug addict,Church employ. What is Church you might ask.Church is somekind of a new religion,or rather something like a governement, since religion doesn't exist in this story, that just believes in facts and expects of all people to believe in that too.In a world were all religious teachings failed big time, all that is left is a strict belief in facts.Ghosts are vicious entities, killing people and Chess's job is to banish those ghosts in the name of Church. The world structure is really more complicated and to be honest i couldn't exactly understand how the ghosts killed people but somehow that didn't make me like any less the book.

As,it didn't make me like it any less the unusual gathering of protagonists...As i said the main heroine is a drug addict, the hero the chief reinforcer of a drug dealer and the third part a rival gangster. An unusual cast don't you think? But they fit exactly in this world.I was annoyed by Chess's excess use of drugs, cause i want my heroes strong willed but at the same time i cared about what happened to her and i even liked her for her sympathy. In the end of the day,i think that Chess has a lot more to show as the series proceeds and i just hope she'll quit drugs.I don't want to start an ethical discussion about drugs using and i believe that that wasn't the author's intention either. It's just the way she created her world...
Terrible on the other hand, the main hero,is unlike any other male protagonist i've ever encountered...Not your typical to die for guy,but huge and scarred, not only on the outside but on the inside as well.Although we don't get to learn more about his personal story in this book there are hints that more will come.
Finally Lex,is the rival gangster who has also claims on Chess.I can't say much about his character as he wasn't really developed and didn't appear in the better part of the book.I just know that i don't want Chess to end up with him...As you guess i'm already team Terrible!

The writing style was perfect...!Dark,creepy,chilly with amazing descriptions even if they were gruesome. The pacing was even. The parts were nothing happened were small and immediatelly after them followed some action filled scenes.I wasn't bored not even for a minute.

All in all,Unholy Ghosts is a really promising first book in a series that i most definitely continue reading. And any Urban Fantasy fan out there should give this series a chance.Believe me you won't be disappointed!
