EARLY REVIEW: Hard Way by Katie Porter

Hard Way by Katie Porter

Publication Date:April 9th 2013
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Edition:ebook, 327 pages
Useful Info: Goodreads, Author's Website

"No holds barred. No mercy. No going back "

Warning: Time to put the kidding aside. Although 100% consensual between a husband and wife, this book contains violent sex that, in some scenes, will appear forced. Readers sensitive to rape scenarios should proceed with caution...

Throughout their eight-year marriage, U.S. Air Force Captain Liam Dash Christiansen and his wife, Sunita, stayed strong through long separations. However Sunny s new job as a high-profile legal advisor puts a severe strain on their enduring bond.

Her abrupt announcement that she wants a divorce is like a missile to Dash s gut but her confession that she s met another man is what unleashes his shocking passion. Sunny is surprised and nearly repulsed by her body s reaction to Dash s animalistic attempt at complete possession. That doesn t stop her from craving more.

With Sunny s whispered approval, their sex life explodes. Not only does Dash s aggression tap into dark fantasies, she s hopeful that now, "at last," she ll get what she s always wanted from her devil-may-care, don t-give-a-damn husband. Something honest and candid. Something real.

Yet fiery, carnal encounters won t heal two long-broken hearts. Their bodies are finally speaking the same forbidden language, but it will take more than taboo desires to learn each other for the first time and to save a marriage that s only just begun.

Hard Way is one of those books that make it really difficult for me to rate. It's that kind of a book that I had quite a few problems with but I can't just ignore the brilliance of the author and totally dismiss it as a bad read. There were things I liked, things I didn't like and things I both loved and hated in Hard Way. Actually, the title of the story itself couldn't describe my feelings towards it better!

Let's start with the things I liked. Do you remember my review of Lead and Follow written by the same author? I was absolutely amazed by that title, so naturally, anything else written by the same author was a must read after that. So, when I got the chance to review in advance Hard Way, I jumped right at it. The thing I loved so much about Lead and Follow was the way Katie Porter (aka Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown) made me enjoy so much a story that was outside my comfort zone. So, when I read the blurb of Hard Way I immediately thought that I was in for a hell of a ride, pretty much the same like before. I mean I have never before read about a couple enjoying engaging in rape scenarios. Like a menage, it is a bit outside my comfort zone, and because of that fact, I was all the more eager to read this book. So, I just kept an open mind towards all the sex scenes. And no matter how violent or rough they were, I didn't mind one bit that fact. I knew what I was going to read, so if I cringed towards any of the sex scenes described it would be no one else's fault but mine. The summary warns the reader enough. So, even though some parts were a bit (or a lot, depending on how you see it) violent, that wasn't my problem. I couldn't engage emotionally in what I was reading, but I could still feel the characters. And that's the brilliance of this duo in my opinion. The way they can make the reader understand their characters and how they communicate and express their emotions during the sexual act.

So, the violence or the "rapes" weren't my problem in Hard Way. My problem was that while I know how great Katie Porter can built a character, in Hard Way both Dash and Sunny felt underdeveloped, felt like a couple of characters with no past and a very bizarre present. And here I have to note that I haven't read any of the previous books in the series, so maybe I'm missing some crucial parts. But since those books can be read as stand alones, I still believe that the author could have done a little bit of a better job building the main characters. The story starts immediately, throwing the reader in the midst of a marriage ready to fall apart, with Sunny asking for a divorce and Dash reacting a little bit violent. Don't get me wrong, he didn't force himself on his wife, he was just rougher than usual and as soon as he saw that Sunny liked it, he stepped up his game. And here is the problem. It was way too soon in the story for the reader to understand either Dash's or Sunny's reactions. There were times that I didn't understand Sunny's reactions at all, if she liked Dash's violence or if she meant it when she asked him to stop. Or I couldn't understand why Dash reacted the way he did. It was the beginning of the story, so naturally the characters hadn't enough time to show us their background. Later on, they developed, I could more or less understand them, but the damage was done. I had lost some of my enthusiasm towards the story.

My other problem was that I couldn't understand how was possible for a couple to be together for so many years and never discuss their problems or understand that they were in for some kinky stuff. You can be shy, but there are always some hints. Granted, both Sunny and Dash were two characters with many problems. So naturally, their marriage would be problematic as well. But the dynamics of their relationship were revealed too late in the story. While the author should show us at first, or at least early in the story, how their marriage operated and then focus on the sex parts, it happened the exact opposite. And while both characters redeemed themselves by the end, the damage was once more already done. Even if by the end Sunny resumed responsibility for her own mistakes rather than blaming Dash for everything, it was a small consolation for me. I already spent the whole book trying to figure her out and disliking her. Because Sunny was my other problem with Hard Way. For a fighter and a woman who knew what she wanted and how to get, she sure acted like a spoiled brat. She chose to fight for anything else but for the man she supposedly loved. Her aversion to having kids or acknowledge what her husband wanted made me like her even less. Because granted, every man or woman can choose whether having kids is what he/she wants in life, but Sunny, just didn't know what she wanted. Her reasoning was a little bit self centred as self centred was the way she chose to react to her fear for Dash's life. But like I said, by the end she redeemed herself. I understood why she acted the way she did and even sympathised with her at some points but still, it was a small consolation.

Dash on the other hand, was a character I liked far more even though he too was a very complex character who could have been explored way more than he was, but still he was sweet even if he seemed to suffer from a split personality at times. I mean he was like two completely different characters throughout the whole story, something that was explained by the end as well, but still I liked him way more than I did Sunny. Bottom line, the problem in Hard Way was that it had two main characters who could add to the whole story if they were better explored, but as it was, they felt incomplete, messing with the whole plotline.

All in all, Hard Way is a story that I enjoyed but had many significant problems especially with the character building. Readers who have a problem with rape scenarios or rough sex should be warned to stay away from this particular story. You won't like it believe me. But for me, the problem with this book didn't lie there. It lay on an inferior character building, especially if one thinks of what these two authors are capable of achieving in that particular department.

REVIEW: Improper Relations by Juliana Ross

Improper Relations by Juliana Ross

Publication Date:April 23rd 2012
Publisher:Carina Press
E-book, 58 pages
Useful Info: Goodreads, Author's Website

Dorset, 1858

When Hannah's caught watching her late husband's cousin debauch the maid in the library, she's mortified—but also intrigued. An unpaid companion to his aunt, she's used to being ignored.

The black sheep of the family, Leo has nothing but his good looks and noble birth to recommend him. Hannah ought to be appalled at what she's witnessed, but there's something about Leo that draws her to him.

When Leo claims he can prove that women can feel desire as passionately as men, Hannah is incredulous. Her own experiences have been uninspiring. Yet she can't bring herself to refuse his audacious proposal when he offers to tutor her in the art of lovemaking. As the tantalizing, wicked lessons continue, she begins to fear she's losing not just her inhibitions, but her heart as well. The poorest of relations, she has nothing to offer Leo but herself. Will it be enough when their erotic education ends?

Improper Relations by Juliana Ross is so small a story that I actually read it in a couple of hours. Yeap, it's really short. Short and really hot that is. Because what this story lacks in plot and character development makes up for level of hotness.

But let's take things from the beginning, shall we? I picked up this book, because many of my trusted GR reviewers have really liked it. So even if I really try to stay away from really short stories, I gave this one a chance. And maybe because I knew from the beginning that I shouldn't be expecting much in the character development and plot department, I ended up liking Improper Relations way more than I probably should. Because this story is focused only in the sex scenes and little more else. And those sex scenes are definitely well written. Now all the rest, that make a good story stand out among the others are barely there. Like a plot. There's no plot. Only a basic one. Inexperienced woman takes sex lessons from experienced man, she falls for him and they live happily ever after. Can't be more basic than that right?

The character development is also as good as absent. And how could it not when Improper Relations is so short. There's simply no room to develop any characters in so small a story. So, like I said, all there is to this book is the sex scenes. Which are well written and hot but once more, I found myself just reading them not caring for the heroes' feelings. I just couldn't feel them or connect with them, because honestly, I didn't have time to get to care for them. So, even if the sex scenes are written in a hot way, still, I couldn't connect to them and fully appreciate them.

Bottom line, pick Improper Relations fully aware that there's not much else in this story apart from some really good sex scenes and a nice setting. If you want a more elaborate story, search somewhere else. This one, will leave you unsatisfied.

ARC REVIEW: Lead and Follow by Katie Porter

Lead and Follow by Katie Porter

Series:Club Devant, #1

Publisher:Samhain Publishing
ebook, 262 pages
Useful Info: Goodreads, Author's Website

The best partners share everything...

Lizzie Maynes's torn ACL threatens more than her career as an international Latin ballroom champion. During her lengthy recovery, her longtime professional partner, Dima Turgenev, has been dancing at the Chelsea District's most notorious burlesque, Club Devant. More than just dancing, he’s been experimenting with shocking new moves that make her want to pull him off stage and get back on tour as soon as possible--the better to keep their successful friendship safe.

Dima knows all about safety, and the lack thereof, because he blames himself for Lizzie’s injury. Far from the pressures of competition, Club Devant is the perfect creative venue to rebuild his rattled confidence. He’d love for Lizzie to join him and revel in the club's intoxicating freedoms. By exploring the new sensual energy simmering between them, they could become more than friends.

Paul Reeves, a recently divorced Texan starting over in the Big Apple, is all for joining the dancers as they blaze through sexual boundaries. But he also knows their sizzling trio won’t last. Lizzie and Dima belong together. Before the last sparks fade, he plans to transform two stubborn friends into lasting lovers--one raunchy lesson at a time.

Warning: Burlesque meets ballroom in this f***ing sexy book when a smoldering Russian dance god and a blonde firecracker with hips possessed by the devil share a sunny, filthy-minded Texan--for just a dance or two.

Before I say anything else about Lead and Follow, I just have to take a moment and note that I picked up this book with a really open mind. You see I have never before read anything quite similar to this story. Never. But I just couldn't resist myself and ask this book for review (and here I really need to say a huge thank you to both Carrie Lofty and Lorelie Brown for providing me with a copy of this book upon my request).

I mean, have you read that premise? As soon as I read it I just had to get this book at all costs. I have a thing both for dancers and Russians. A hot Russian dancer? How could I ever resist that combo? No way! So, I picked this book up and literally devoured it! Oh it's that good and if it's possible, even better!

The writing style and character development is great as one would expect from the duo of authors. I'm not familiar with Lorelie Brown's writing style (but now I desperately want to!) but I'm in love with Carrie Lofty's writing style. I have still not read a story of hers that didn't grab me and in the end of day I didn't enjoy. So, as far as the writing is concerned, Lead and Follow is incredible! The characters are multi-dimensional, have wants and needs and they are flawed as any real person would be. So even though I couldn't really understand them (I'll explain in a bit why) and their needs and wishes I cared for them and I could connect with them. And it's the first time that I can connect with a set of characters I can't fully understand what motivates them.

So, let me explain now why I couldn't really understand the characters. Like I said in the beginning, it's the first time I read something like Lead and Follow. And that is a truly erotica novel. Yeah, that 50 Shades craziness has caught up with me, so sure, I have read some erotica novels, but nothing with menage or M/M romance in it. Lead and Follow is erotica in its very core. It's all about sex and carnal wishes but with a great set of characters and a plot in there. It has lots of hot sex in it, but even if the story is centered around sex, it's not just that. So, the reason I couldn't fully understand Dima and Lizzie was purely personal and simply because I couldn't myself fathom what motivated them. How could they love so much each other and engage in sex with others. I couldn't put myself in Lizzie's shoes and imagine myself being turned on by seeing the man I love having sex with another man. That's why I couldn't relate to the characters, but still, I could connect with them. To make a long story short, the whole story was outside my comfort zone. Am I making any sense?

Anyway, Lead and Follow delivers exactly what the premise indicates and then so much more!!! I couldn't care less if I understood the characters. The scenes were incredibly sexy and I couldn't care less if Dima was playing for both teams. He was one sexy man with an incredibly dirty mind!

But like I said, Lead and Follow, although centered around sex, isn't only about that. It explores relationships and their dynamics, how our fears can hold us back, from everything, and how much better it is to chase what you want even if you're afraid you might lose everything in the process. Because otherwise, you might lose the chance of even trying to.

Lead and Follow is how an erotica novel should be written. Because a good erotic story isn't only about well written sex scenes. It's about making you care for characters outside your comfort zone. And in that area, this story delivered everything I didn't even dare to hope for!

Review first published at Book Lovers Inc

Hot Ride is my first book written by Kelly Jamieson, and even though I had some problems with this book, let me tell you that it won't be the last story I read by this author! The level of hotness, was simply so high that I can't possibly pass the chance of seeing what other this author can manage.

But let's talk about Hot Ride. Have you read that premise? Seriously, the premise alone made me drool all over the place! It's not a secret that I have a thing for agents, FBI, CIA, you name it, I don't care! I love agents and if they are undercover and they fall in love while being undercover on a mission ,then all the better for me! So, as you can guess, the story of Hot Ride was right up my alley, and something I was pretty certain that I would enjoy. And although I can't just say that I didn't enjoy this book, I had some major problems with it, or rather with the execution of the story, that I'm afraid reflect in my final rating of this book.

My main problem with this book was that it was flat. Even if the story was something I could highly enjoy, it still felt flat. I couldn't really connect with either of the main heroes. The sexual tension at the beginning of the book was so good that I couldn't put the book down, but soon after Sera and Ryan hooked up, it felt that there simply wasn't anything else left to be said. Nothing. So even if the sexual tension department was given in an amazing way, from the result, it seems that there wasn't much else in Hot Ride to make it move forward.

There were repetitions, if I read one more time how others spoke about Sera as if she wasn't present or how Ryan was unable to type, I think I might scream. The character development, both for the main as well as the secondary characters, wasn't enough. I mean, Jamieson did a great job introducing some of the gang members and their wives, only to never fully explore the potential and the dynamics that their development as characters would add to this story. Because if there's one thing in Hot Ride, that is potential. Potential for a mind blowing story. Only everything was just focused on the sex department. And even if that was a good department, it can't make up for the lack of everything else I'm afraid. Because even if the romance was sexy, in the end of day you just get two characters for whom you never really care because they don't have enough background. Jamieson did provide a background for both her main characters but it just wasn't enough. It was done in haste as in haste wrapped up the whole story in the end.

All in all, Hot Ride was surely hot, but not a really smooth going ride. It had up and downs and although I did enjoy it as a book, it could easily have been so much better! I will try this author again though, that's for sure!

EARLY REVIEW: Platinum by Jeffe Kennedy

Platinum by Jeffe Kennedy

Publication Date:February 25th 2013
Publisher:Carina Press
ebook
Useful Info: Goodreads, Author's Website

Althea Grant's Charleston gallery might be suffering from the bad economy, and her artistic aspirations have gone nowhere, but she's doing just fine, thank you. When bad-boy sculptor Steel rides up on his motorcycle looking to rent studio space, his infusion of cash is more than welcome. But his art is raw, visceral, sexual—and completely inappropriate for her pastel world of watercolor landscapes.

Steel, fascinated by Althea's rare albino coloring, sees in her the key to his next piece: a metal satyr designed for bondage games. Moving into her gallery basement is the first step; seducing the cool Southern belle into modeling for him is the second.

As Steel peels away her careful manners and tasteful outfits, Althea begins to realize her life isn't just fine at all—it's as pale and washed-out as the watercolor paintings she's failing to sell. Can she transform her life and accept her most secret desires?
The review was originally published at Book Lovers Inc

To be completely honest, I don't even know how to rate Platinum by Jeffe Kennedy and it's my second erotica title in a row that I face the very same problem. And that is none other, than the whole story being focused on the sex and nothing else apart from that. Should I rate Platinum based on how hot a book it is or how well described the sex scenes are, my rating would probably be a 4. But a good book, erotica or no, isn't the one that is hot. That's still an important factor, especially if the title is within the erotica genre, but come on authors, there are so many other things for you to explore other than that. Like a plot, or character development and easy flowing dialogues. The hot sex is good but what of all the other things that make your story solid?

Platinum I'm afraid falls into that category of books where there's nothing else to it other than the sex parts. There's no plot, no character development, the characters have a minimum background, the dialogues are cheesy as hell and stiff and to sum it up, there's nothing going on in this book other than the two protagonists having hot sex every other page.

I mean, the whole story starts with a brief introduction of Althea and Steel (yeah the guy goes under that name and not his real one, had me laughing hysterically over that name quite a few times, because do you get the metaphor here, or is only my mind THAT dirty?) and before you even know it, Steel lives under Althea's roof, giving her easy access to his, ehm... art. We get a couple of chapters before the whole action begins, I have to give credit to the author for that one, where we get to meet Althea a little bit better and how uptight she is and in desperate need of a good old fashioned f**k. After that point, all we get is sex, sex and oh, some more sex. All we really know about Althea is the fact that she once wanted to be an artist but never had the talent, how prim and proper she is, but underneath that facade, she craves for something spicier in her life that manages to unlock her ability to paint as well. While on the other hand, all we know about Steel is that he had a troubled past, he's a good artist and likes to have his sex a little bit rougher in the edges. That's all.

As far as the plot of Platinum is concerned, well, there's not one to be honest. Nothing. All the story is about is how some rough sex can make an uptight woman feel better and increase her self esteem and because we do want our happily ever after, she finds the man of her dreams in the process (of having rough sex that is). And speaking of the man of her dreams, that ending was so quickly wrapped up, so unrealistic that it just managed to make me roll my eyes one more time before I reached the last word of this book.

All in all, Platinum is a hot story and if you're searching for just well written sex, then this is just the book for you. If like me, you care about other things of little consequence such as good characters and a plot, then stay away from Platinum. You will feel disappointed.

REVIEW: The Pleasures of Winter by Evie Hunter

The Pleasures of Winter by Evie Hunter

Publication Date:November 1st 2012
Publisher:Penguin Ireland
Paperback, 400 pages
Useful Info: Goodreads, Author's Website, Book Depository

The Pleasures of Winter is a steamy erotic story of romantic obsession and explosive sexual chemistry for fans of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You.

When reporter Abbie Marshall needs to escape Honduras, a private jet carrying a Hollywood A-lister is her only way out. She has a ride home with Irish actor Jack Winter - notorious womanizer and all round bad boy. Abbie is shaken to the core by Winter's blazing beauty and provocative mind.

After the plane's nose-dive into the remote rainforest forces them to fight for survival, Abbie catches tantalizing glimpses of the complicated man behind the image. And the more she sees of him, the more he touches some primal part of her that she is determined to suppress. But after a devastating encounter with Winter's shadow side, Abbie's detachment is shattered.

On returning to normal life, Abbie cannot forget what happened, nor ignore the shocking rumours about the star's private life. Her struggle to make sense of her torment leads straight back to Winter, who is just as obsessed by her. But if they are to have a relationship, Abbie knows she must embrace his hidden desires ... and accept her own.

No longer caring about anything but their intoxicating love affair, Abbie is drawn deeper into the dark heart of Winter - and the secret that threatens to destroy everything ...

'Evie Hunter' is actually two Irish authors who discovered a mutual love of erotic fiction when doing a creative writing workshop two years ago. They are delighted the rest of the world has caught up with them. Before writing The Pleasures of Winter, their first full-length novel, they co-wrote a number of BDSM-themed novellas.
Review first published at Book Lovers Inc

With all the craziness that 50 Shades has created recently and after seeing one erotica, BDSM themed, story being published after the other, I had made a promise to myself that I would try to stay away from it all. Since 50 Shades weren't really one of my favorite books and not for its story but for the writing style, it was only natural for me to stay away from anything that is promoted to be the next 50 Shades, only better. To be honest with myself, I was tempted more than a few times by some titles but always managed to stir away from temptation. But, with The Pleasures of Winter, I just couldn't resist. Even if deep down I knew that I shouldn't try it, that premise made me break my promise and pick up this book. Now I read it, I think that promises are made for a reason and next time, I'd do well to not break them...

The Pleasures of Winter, is indeed a book fans of 50 would really enjoy and like some other reviewers said, better written. And I can't agree more about either of those facts. Pleasures of Winter follows the exact same pattern with 50 (with spankings, obsessive heroes and the like), only the writing style is so much better, with actual plot in the story and there's not a moment you want to smack your head on any available surface due to repetitions or the appearances of inner goddesses. Hands down, this book is actually written in a way that you can easily read it and there's some character development. But, despite that, it still wasn't the right book for me.

The best part of Pleasures of Winter is by far the first part of the story that is set in the jungle. The part where Abbie and Winter crash in the jungle and fight for survival is the best part of the book. I liked everything about it. Well, everything right up their last day in the jungle that is and the first real hint of Winter's sexual appetites. Up until Winter "punished" Abbie for disobeying him I was sure that this would be an erotica title that I would love. After that, I felt uneasy towards Winter but still had hopes that he would somehow redeem himself, something that unfortunately never happened.

Maybe, BDSM themed stories are not for me. I don't know. Most of the stories with that theme that I read, were certainly not for me, but, there are a few that I really liked, so probably, it's not the theme that I don't like, but the way the hero or heroine is portrayed. And although Abbie was a nice character, well written and even if submissive in bed not a pushover, Winter was, for lack of a better description a real jerk. I didn't like Pleasures not because of the BDSM theme, not because of the writing style, not even because of the fact that it's a story already been written and said but because of the main hero, who I just couldn't picture him as sexy and caring no matter how hard I tried. The way he treated Abbie was horrific. I mean, I get the whole spanking idea, BUT only if both participants are okay with it all. How would you call a man who just starts spanking you just because you disobeyed him and it's not in the middle of a sexual act you both agree to, or you don't even know that this is the way he's turned on? Winter just starts spanking Abbie while she has no kind of relationship with him, she doesn't know a thing about him and they're not even in the middle of a sexual game. Because in my world, that screams abusive. It's a whole other thing to consent to something and a whole other to just get thrown in the middle of it with no prior knowledge. Who cares if Abbie is turned of in the end by the spanking? I don't. I was so repulsed with the whole scenario that from that point on, nothing Winter did could be perceived as sexy from me. And to make matters worst, he keeps treating Abbie badly and I'm not talking about while exploring her submissive side. Somewhere in the end of the story, Abbie and Winter break up and Winter's attempt to make up to her and take Abbie back is only saying that he's sorry (I think I'm not 100% certain about the sorry part), not giving any explanation whatsoever for his behavior and when Abbie isn't responding the way he'd liked he threatens her with punishment for not being obedient on the spot. I mean come on!!!! Is that even remotely sexy??? Is something wrong with me that I can't see it as sexy?

Like I said, maybe BDSM themed stories are not my cup of tea, despite enjoying a few of them in the past. But for me to enjoy any book, I must like the heroes and understand them, regardless the story's theme. So maybe, BDSM books are harder to write in terms of character, I don't know. The thing is, that The Pleasures of Winter was yet another failure for me, a book that might be well written and with sufficient character development, but with a main hero who I could never understand or find likable. I can't recommend it, but it will have a certain appeal to fans of 50 Shades, that's for sure.

This review was first published at Book Lovers Inc

Forbidden Magic was an utter disappointment for me I'm afraid... I have seen the mixed reviews on Goodreads, but still I thought that I should give it a try. After all, the premise sounded more than intriguing and Cheyenne McCray is a big name out there.

So, I picked it up, only to be quite certain from the very first chapters that I wouldn't like it. I just had that feeling and I knew that no matter how hard I tried, I wouldn't be able to get into this book. And I'm sad to say, that my opinion of Forbidden Magic didn't change as I kept reading. Somewhere after the middle of the book I just started reading this on the fast forward. I just skipped the various and informative sex scenes and just read whatever grabbed my attention. As it is, I don't think I missed much...

The first thing I noticed were the incredibly cheesy names... I could maybe go with Hawk (the hero has wings...) and Silver (the heroine's hair are blond) but Moondust??? Please! But the cheese doesn't stop there... The problem with Forbidden Magic is that is far too cheesy and far too predictable for me to enjoy it... There's immediate lust and even if the sex part between Hawk and Silver arrives a little bit later than what I expected, Hawk's constant hard on as soon as he laid eyes on Silver and Silver's tightening womb caused every single time Hawk moved, irked me to no end... And since I'm talking about cheesy, I can hardly refrain myself from mentioning that incredible scene were Silver and Hawk perform the ritual to call more D' Danann warriors through a perfectly nice blowjob! Nothing more powerful than that guys!

Anyway, Forbidden Magic leans more on the erotica side with paranormal elements than a paranormal romance story. There's too much sex, a bit meaningless at times, and those scenes where Junga, one of the demons, has sex in various positions and with various partners were completely unnecessary. There were at least three scenes where that Junga chick explores the submissive side of her human body and why should I care?

The plot like I said is cheesy and predictable, the character development barely there and even though the writing style is good, I'm afraid it couldn't save the whole book for me.

All in all, Forbidden Magic has received so many mixed reviews for a reason. Sadly, I find myself with those reviewers that didn't like it although I think that it's more a matter of preference. For some people to love it, it must have some qualities that I failed to notice.

REVIEW: No Reservations by Lilly Cain

No Reservations by Lilly Cain

Publication Date:October 29th 2012
Publisher:Carina Press
ebook
Useful Info: Goodreads, Author's Website

Travis Morgan is thrilled to encounter the one woman who's never failed to get his blood pumping. Seeing Alicia Davis again brings it all back: their fierce academic rivalry, and the fact that he never followed through on his erotic fantasies about her.

Alicia can't resist Travis's smoldering sensuality—or the opportunity to finally bed the man who starred in so many of her lustful daydreams in college. Unable to avoid the temptation to best Travis one more time, Alicia plans to submit to one night of pure pleasure and then leave Travis empty-handed and craving more.

When Travis wakes up and realizes Alicia's played him, the gloves are off, and the game heats up as they each try to emerge on top—by whatever means necessary...

When I read the premise of No Reservations, I instantly got the impression that we were talking about a seriously hot and cute romantic story. Rivals as students, Travis and Alicia meet each other after many years, and all the passion their rivalry was hiding, suddenly explodes. The premise couldn't be more misleading I'm afraid... Because although the story is in truth that, No Reservations is so small that no story actually unfolds. There's just sex. It's almost like those adult movies, where everyone knows and wants to see it for the sex, but there's also some basic plot, movies I usually call porn with a screenplay.

To understand how small a story this one is, imagine that I started it in bed, as a light reading before I fell asleep, and I finished it in a matter of an hour... You can easily imagine, that when we are talking about a 50 pages long story, where the sex plays a major part and there are like 4 sex scenes in there, there's no much room for an actual plot to unfold. Travis and Alicia fall immediately in bed after we're only 10 pages in the story and they just keep doing it until the very end. Which I have no problem with, but let's face it, No Reservations, is just about sex and nothing else apart from that. So if you're into that kind of book, try it. If like me, you expect for something more than a simple reason for the couple to fall in bed, look for something else.

So, I won't even say anything about the plot or the character development. Both elements are simple non existent. Even if the premise promises something really good, believe me, this book doesn't deliver it. And it's a pity, because the whole idea, if a little further explored, could transform this book into something amazing.

As it is, when I can't connect with the characters even in a basic level, no matter how hot the sex scenes, they just leave me unimpressed. So, I don't know if it's just me or if indeed, the sex scenes were rushed and nothing extraordinary. And talking about sex, I saw that this book was tagged somewhere as BDSM, which I'm afraid is not... Except if you count the use of a sex toy as a restrainment as BDSM or pinning someone down as kinky. I don't really know...

All in all, No Reservations was nothing like what I expected it to be, too small for my taste or for any plot to be unfolded. The good thing about it though is the fact that it is so small, that at least you don't spend much time trying to finish it. You'll be done with it in a matter of an hour.

Review first published at Book Lovers Inc

The Theory of Attraction was a pleasant surprise for me. I haven't really read all that much erotica or BDSM themed stories, that are currently THE trend, and the couple of which I have read were a bit of a disappointment... But The Theory of Attraction was a pleasant and really hot surprise that I devoured in one sitting. Literally. It wasn't a really long story after all.
The Theory of Attraction is the story of Ivan, a totally clueless in social interactions genius scientist and Camilla, his neighbor who is secretly lusting after him for a long time before anything happens between them.

Let me say here that the story seems being split into two parts. The first part, where no sex is involved, is the building of the story, where we get to know the two main characters and get warmed up to them and the second half, where all the sex takes place and we get to know the characters in a lot different way. That splitting is what I didn't really like about this book, mostly, because Ivan's character is almost split in two as well. Because the Ivan of the first half of the story is nothing like the Ivan as Dom. It's almost like reading about a different person.

Let me explain myself. As soon as the story begins, we get to know Ivan as a gorgeous and really clever scientist, who's totally clueless in all human and social interactions. Somewhere is mentioned that he's borderline autistic. And from how he's described in the first half, you can totally place him somewhere there, although not quite. But Ivan of the second half, has nothing to do with that shy and reclusive person. He's far from shy, far from clueless in understanding other people, far from what we learned about him in the first part, period. His character isn't simply consistent. Though the fact that he's into the BDSM lifestyle is creatively explained and believable, scientist Ivan has nothing to do with Dom Ivan. I can understand how he wasn't shy while in a BDSM context but what I can't understand is how he seems unable to understand people when not in a sexual situation whereas when being Dom he understands everything perfectly and seems to anticipate his sub's needs. It just doesn't add up or I just haven't researched much on BDSM lifestyle and I'm just missing something. And it's not only that but how he also seems to get everything when Camilla explains it to him. It's like no one ever explained to him how to behave before Camilla which I find rather hard to believe to be honest.

Apart from that, the writing style is nice, easy flowing and full of humor. It made an already interesting and good story flow even easier. But what I have to note about The Theory of Attraction, and I can't stress that enough is that it's one seriously hot piece of story. And when I say hot, I mean really HOT! Some of the scenes there were incredible. The chemistry between Ivan and Camilla was touchable and at last, we have a sub who isn't that pathetic kind of heroine who has absolutely no self-esteem but is consensual and fully aware of what she does and really enjoying it.

All in all, The Theory of Attraction is a hot and sexy as hell story that I totally recommend. If for nothing else but for the creativity of some scenes :P
