A peek inside lethal Inheritance and its author

Hi my name is Tahlia Newland. Anna very kindly invited me over to talk about me and my novel.

Yes, I’m an author. I’ve written a YA paranormal fantasy called Lethal Inheritance, and like so many others I’m now trying to get it published. It’s a daunting task. Even though I found an agent, the numerical odds are still against a publishing house picking it up.

So, you might ask, why bother?
I had to write it because I got inspired, and I had to keep working at it because it’s a good story. It deserves to be done properly, and if I stopped before it was published, all the work I had already done would be wasted. The more I did on it, the more I had to do.

Is this person crazy?

Yes. Creativity is my talent, my friend, my master, my solace and my burden. I’m an artist. I always have been, first a painter, not a very good one, so I gave it up when I left College. Next I became a dancer. I wasn’t great at that either, so I moved into mime, mask and visual theatre. I made a living doing that for twenty years and made masks at the same time. Now I’m an author. Why? Because one day scenes from the novel started leaping into my mind like a movie. The urge to write took hold of me, so I wrote. That’s how I am.

People often ask me what my book’s about and I always hesitate for a moment, wondering what about the book would resonate most with that particular person. Generally I say something like -

Lethal Inheritance is about Ariel, a seventeen year old girl on a rescue mission in a hidden layer of reality. Demons who feed on fear are trying to kill her, and while learning to turn her mind into a weapon, she falls in love with Nick, a Warrior whose power is more than either of them can handle.

Of course there is much more to it than that.

Who is she rescuing? Her mother.

Who from? Demons

Why did they kidnap her? You’ll have to read the book to find that out.

Where is this hidden layer of reality? Right here, you just can’t see it unless you know how to look.

How can you kill demons who feed on fear? You have to learn to transform your fear into mental power and channel it down a sword to zap the demons. That’s quite a skill, so you need to sort out the fake trainers from the real ones and get some training before you start chasing after demons.

What sort of demons are they? There are three different kinds, some small, relatively harmless and kind of cute, others larger, uglier and meaner, and the really nasty ones are like this…

The black, flowing form was human in size and shape, but slimy skin hung in folds like the fabric of a long hooded cloak. Long loose arms dangled at the creature’s sides and his clawed hands flexed and unflexed as his head swung from side to side, searching for his prey. Icy white flames, flicking like snake tongues, blazed from two slits in his hideous face and cast an eerie glow. Another slash of flaming white formed a thin-lipped mouth.

What sort of a Warrior is Nick? A demon slayer. More specifically, someone who finds the Radiant Power within their mind and learns to use it to destroy demons and the Serpentine that infests the human race.

Serpentine? What’s this? Imagine a giant tapeworm, invisible to most people’s eyes. It feeds off negative energy and as it grows it incites people to more negativity. Violence breeds violence, right?

Okay. What’s this power that’s too much for Nick and Ariel to handle? Well you’re going to have to read the book to answer this one too, but here’s a hint. He happens to look into her eyes and ….

Overwhelmed by the almost unbearable intimacy, Ariel ripped her gaze from his. Flustered and confused, she was barely able to breathe as bliss vibrated through her body. Even when the intensity faded, she still felt the energy radiating from his body. It sizzled between them like water on a hot plate.

Mmm. If this has piqued your interest, pop over to my website and read Chapter 1. On the blog page, you can keep up to date with where I’m at in the process of finding a publisher. And if you like what you read and would like to help the novel get published, there’s a page of ideas there of things you can do.

I’m a great believer in people power.
Thanks Anna for having me over.
