ENEMIES DON’T NEED TO BE ALIVE TO BE DEADLY.
For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.
Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.
More or less,Unholy Magic follows the same pattern and plotline of Unholy Ghosts. We follow Chess's adventures, while she's yet again on the chase of some seriously bad magic and ghosts and along with that thrill ride you get to know more and more about her,the people surrounding her and the world where the story unfolds.
This time i didn't encounter the same language problem i had with the first book of the series.I don't think that happened because of any change in the writing style,i just got used to it and didn't have a problem getting into the story immediately. And what a story it was...!I don't know if it's just me and the fact i got into the story immediately this time, but the story of Unholy MAgic seemed to me somehow more tight than the one of the first book.It still has the same even pace but the difference was that now i understood exactly the world building and how the bad guys worked.Again,i'll note that it maybe just be me and nothing actually different in the writing style.Believe me,knowing from the beggining what's going on and not trying to translate the dialogues is a huge advantage!
Anyway, again in this book i was a bit troubled by Chess's drug addiction, which is shown in more extent in this installment, but again i found myself caring deeply for her and what happened to her.I mean,on the one hand i couldn't connect with her and the actions she was more or less forced to take because of her addiction but on the other i could really feel her and sympathise with her.I could actually feel her frustration and how imprisoned she felt at times and for that exact reasons i really wanted for every bad thing that happened to her to get fixed right that second, only for her to feel better.I knew she just met the coincequences of her very actions but that didn't make me feel bad for her nonetheless.
Terrible on the other hand is... just an amazing guy.I have to admit,my all time fictional crush is Bones, but i'm afraid to say so,he's starting to have some serious competition...!Who could have imagined that a seemingly impenetrable and tough guy could actually be so sensitive and thoughtfull!I just loved him and his fightings with Chess were amazing.Through those fightings you could get glimpses of his character and the way he thought about things and i really enjoyed those parts, well mostly! My other part was just occupied feeling Chess's desperation during those fights...
There's really not much i can say about this book,if you have read the first one don't expect many differences here.Same easy writing style, strong plot and amazing set of characters. So,if you liked the first book in the series, this will get you addicted further to this amazing, dark, cruel but wonderful world!Honest;y,Downside Ghosts is the best Urban Fantasy series i read in 2010.Don't miss it!
Great review, have these books on my list. Question is how am I gonna ever widdle down my list lol.
